My six-year-old daughter had four friends over for a sleepover several nights ago, and first thing in the morning (7:15), I found all five of them in slippers in the garden. Eating carrots. With a bucket of water for rinsing. And after the carrots they went in on the last of the snap peas.

I'm certain we agree: A kid in the garden is an auspicious start.
