A friend passed on yuor link to me. I love the Nearing's "The Maple Sugar Book" which I just read this year. I do a little maple sugaring for an educational program at my museum site in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula. YOu hit it right on the head of describing this experience. And for the comment on the right clothes: you can never go wrong with Carharts, but wool is very good on a cold day collecting sap as well.

What do you recommend for sap-collecting clothing? Wool is a bit old-fashion and all these poly-plastic fleeces seem out of place, but leather? At first I thought orange leather would be silly, but maybe Eddie's got something there...and it can be used in hunting season!

I love this. I was right there with you as I read it. Feeling the cold on my cheeks and the high fire of fun. I spent the day, today, in Memorial Hospital (Sloan Kettering) NYC, praying that my friend would not die from her 6-1/2 hour operation for non-smoker's lung cancer. Every modern technique in the world was used on this woman --a certain far cry from what you were living on that weekend. Reading your life, makes me realize how utterly important it is to love your work, love your life. Sure there are moments of frustration and, okay, sadness...for the lack of something...but this woman who I was praying for, loves her life...and she's an urbanite who only 3 years ago moved to the suburbs and says her flower garden and her vegetable garden have saved her soul. We all need to dig in the soil, cherish a piece of land, and love our lives. Getting syrup from a tree seems like its almost over the top. Congratulations to you on being able to drive the horse-drawn sleigh And glad you didn't dunk a dog.
