Once again you've hit the right notes. From layoffs to Madoffs to payoffs should become the mantra for this recession/depression. And you've escaped it all to Vermont. Such a fine move.

Great post! I love how you combine your personal experience with the current state of the world and remind me why I should read more classics. It's all a big cycle, right? Looking forward to the sauerkraut.

Growing up in Massachusetts I use to think I knew space and what taking a deep breath felt like until I moved to a place where I understood the gift of Silence...no constant city hum, no
freeway drone from afar. Your writing places me in THE moment and is refreshingly candid. Keep those homeopathics out of the "closet", we need everyone to show up just as we are...and dang, I do believe you have given me the courage to make sauerkraut for the first time in my dear 58 years. Thank you for your keen eye and fluid movement with words.

Well the truth is (if there is such a concept as truth in this matter), once you grow up with a big sky (Southwestern Colorado) and dogs running all over the place, kittens in your bed and cows in your front yard or horses --either way, big creatures in a pasture where your eyes get to roam-- city life can be excruciating. Walking down the blocks/canyons (as they are often called) the eye travels high if you're longing for space -but I think a real urbanite looks at feet --am I right about that? - notices shoes rather than the tops of the buildings? Did you get your muck boots?

You're an incredible writer, Makenna! Your descriptions so right on, and a joy to follow. I should hire you to contribute to the Wanderlust Chronicles, hopefully you'll accept payment in Nicaraguan Cordobas. Speaking of, you need to plan a visit down here when you have time, I think life in Central America would very much mesh with your worldview. jmg

Hi. Found your link on Twitter from a new Twitter source I started today called grow. life. Actually on Twitter you can't punctuate, so it is grow_life. And I had to comment because of your reference to the Grapes of Wrath. I was talking about this book this morning as my communications team was debating messages around feeding the world. Why some messages work; why some don't. Fascinating. So I started Twitter page to see what the universe says about this - and here you are. I look forward to more conversations! Kelly
